If you had asked 10-year-old Becky Molina if she ever imagined standing on a stage speaking at a major fundraising event, she would have laughed and gone back to recess with her friends.
At that time, she did not even want to join the program that would later change her life.
Growing up, Becky’s world was defined by familiarity. She attended the same schools as her peers and lived in a neighborhood where everyone spoke both Spanish and English and understood her experience. It was comfortable. It was home.
So when she first heard about Boys Hope Girls Hope, now Hope Ignites Phoenix, she was not interested. She remembers seeing an older student from her neighborhood return wearing a uniform, speaking differently, and carrying herself with confidence. Instead of feeling inspired, Becky felt resistant.
“That’s not for me,” she thought.
But in fifth grade, a teacher saw something in Becky that she could not yet see in herself. With encouragement and a firm push from her mom, she applied. Out of 75 students, she was one of just eight selected.
That moment marked the beginning of a transformation.
A New World and a New Sense of Belonging
Transitioning into a new school environment was not easy.
Becky went from an underserved public school to a campus filled with resources and opportunities she had never imagined. The shift was overwhelming. She felt out of place and unsure of where she fit.
But she was not alone.
Surrounded by other scholars navigating similar transitions, Becky found something she did not expect. She found a sense of belonging.
Together, they built a community rooted in shared experiences, mutual support, and the willingness to step into unfamiliar spaces.
That is where everything began to change.
“That is the ripple effect of this program.”
Beyond One Student: A Family Transformed
At the time Becky joined the program, her family of five lived in a one-bedroom trailer. Her parents, who had immigrated to the United States in search of opportunity, were working tirelessly to build a better future.
As Becky grew through Hope Ignites, something else began to shift. Her family’s vision of what was possible grew alongside her.
With determination, sacrifice, and support, her parents reached a life-changing milestone. They became homeowners, the first in their extended family to do so.
That moment did not just impact their household. It sparked something larger.
Extended family members followed a similar path and eventually became homeowners themselves. Today, Becky’s cousin is continuing the legacy as a Hope Ignites scholar.
“That is the ripple effect of this program,” Becky shared.
It is not just about one student. It is about families, futures, and generations.
“When you see me fly, remember that you are the ones who painted my wings.”
Expanding What’s Possible
With strong academic preparation and support, Becky earned highly competitive scholarships that allowed her to graduate college debt free.
Her journey continued to expand in ways she never imagined.
She studied abroad in Italy, attended conferences across the country, and stepped into spaces that once felt out of reach.
Her world, once centered in a single neighborhood, grew to include opportunities across industries, cities, and cultures.
At every step, she had a network that supported her and showed up when it mattered most.
Coming Full Circle
In 2024, Becky interned in St. Louis, navigating a new city and new challenges. She even drove a borrowed pickup truck to work each day, a detail she now recalls with humor and pride.
More importantly, the experience reinforced something deeper.
Hope Ignites does more than prepare students academically. It supports them in life.
Today, Becky serves on staff at Hope Ignites, determined to be the person she once needed.
This fall, her story comes full circle in a new way. Her younger brother will begin his journey as a Hope Ignites scholar.
“You Painted My Wings”
Becky’s journey is rooted in gratitude.
For her parents, whose sacrifices made everything possible.
For mentors and staff who believed in her potential.
For a community that chose to invest in her future.
In her closing words, she shared a message to her parents that resonated with everyone in the room:
“When you see me fly, remember that you are the ones who painted my wings.”
The Power of Investment
Becky’s story is a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people, we are not just changing one life. We are creating a ripple effect that extends to families, communities, and future generations.
Because somewhere right now, there is another student who does not yet see what is possible.
And with the right support, they will.
